it was churchill who said "Democracy is an awful way to run a country, but it's the best system we have".which after the stern hu case in china http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304151504575171102420921446.html?mod=WSJ_World_LEFTSecondNews
really higlights a fundamental difference between china and the rest of the world. we all might have our problems but our governments are mature enough and the people want freedom enough to make sure that a) the army never gains control and b) when we get sick of them enough we kick them out of power. all governments are corrupt.it is how far we let them go. in thailand the people are fighting tooth and nail to keep democracy because they know what a dictatorship is about. unlimited corruption.

the stern hu case just shows thta no matter how much china becomes stronger it will never (in its current form) be acceptable to people who know what an open legal system is (no matter how bad it is ). the secret trial, a chinese standard is an indictment of the governments hatred of the chinese people. there are more than enough chinese scholars who say that. and no they arent haters of the chinese people. some time in the future unless there is change in china there will be a clash between countries wanting a powerful china trade and all it brings and the values that we (who believe in justice, fairness, transparency, responisve government )in the west (and in many countries they dream of) believe in. maybe we will lose and victory willbelong to those who want to rule from above, without any constraints. but it will be a hollow victory.a shallow victory and not a lasting one.

it was churchill who said "Democracy is an awful way to run a country, but it's the best system we have".

Bernard Shaw said dancing is the vertical expression of horizonal desire.  So what?  As far as I am concerned, both of them were expressing their own personal views that cannot be subject to objective test and quantification.

If you think the remark carries great truth because Winston Churchill was a great man of wisdom and a political genius, then how is the sentiment of yours different from our own towards our leaders such as Mao that you seem to despise?

which after the stern hu case in china http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304151504575171102420921446.html?mod=WSJ_World_LEFTSecondNews
really higlights a fundamental difference between china and the rest of the world.

Yes we are different. There is no diplomatic way of stating that glaring truth.  And this is the corollary imperative given the difference in our geography, our climate, our resources, our neighbours, our built, our health, our brain structure etc etc, and therefore our history, civilisation, belief system, our economic system etc etc.

You seem surprised by the existence of difference, why?

we all might have our problems but our governments are mature enough and the people want freedom enough to make sure that a) the army never gains control and b) when we get sick of them enough we kick them out of power.

Don't get us wrong, we are not necessarily the quiet suffering type.  It's just that we tend to give the government a longer trial period.  But every few hundred years, we kick them out by brute force too and kill every single one of them associated with power and authority.  But only after we have tried to outwit the system and failed and after we have been feeling hungry for long enough.

Our mentality towards the authority is that, you do your business and govern properly and I go on minding my own and paying my tax.  I think that is fair enough.

all governments are corrupt.it is how far we let them go. in thailand the people are fighting tooth and nail to keep democracy because they know what a dictatorship is about. unlimited corruption.

If I have to be brutally honest I think the red shirts are a bunch of brain washed mud-legs who are either bought or so stupid that they even forget their own tradition and values. What have the West given them, is Thailand not the first country to be plundered by Soros and his banksters and suffered deeply for years?

The main cause of corruption is not political system, but general IQ of the citizens. Amongst some of the cleanest countries, Finland, iceland, Singapore, HK, the former 2 are democratically arranged, but not the later two.  India and the Philippines are both democratic countries but horrendously corrupted.

the stern hu case just shows thta no matter how much china becomes stronger it will never (in its current form) be acceptable to people who know what an open legal system is (no matter how bad it is )

Yes, I see you have made up your mind Grin.

and to answer your question it is the corrupted officials, the sweat shops, the tainted milk powder, the collapsed coal mines that makes China the country we love and a country that improves itself ceaselessly.  Mao said the USA is a paper tiger and Hu said here comes a monumental historical opportunity that we must use every ounce of energy in us to catch.  The Chinese love their Party Secretaries and Premiers, take it from me.

from memory white wolves they call you llot. take with one hand then bite with the other. thats what my party friend in beijing called hk people.

the red shirts in thailand show what the chinese people have shown - guts and character whilst their coolie cousins in hk didnt and continue to not show.
had a chinese govt person drop in to australia recently and yet agian said about k people 'our puppets' and laundry people. 'clean our money, act like white folk for us '. god summary i thought.

cnt wait til central is run like chong qing. then you will be chinese. by then you will beg for a foriegn passport.  white girl

It is a given that everyone of us like to feel good about ourselves, if I am not richer/prettier/taller/smarter than Mei Kwun my friend, my father is definitely richer/handsomer/taller/smarter than her father.  If this is still not the case then the home town of my family must be bigger/prettier/more famous/more important/more developed etc than her family's.  If even this is not the case then the food of our home town must be tastier etc etc.  This is ego and the starting point of parochialism.

And China is simply so big that there exist multifarious kinds of egoistic and pariochial conceptions amongst people under every fathomable catagorization by geography/economic development/dialect/staple food etc etc.  But because we are still one country, the conception is far less prejudicial and hurtful than perhaps that between the Germans and the Polish people.

The fact is, there are zillions in China who are now rich enough to start wanting to feel good about themselves and having an inflated view about their own prowess and economic muscle.  The end of HK will confirm their success and correctness, and be a great boost to their ego.  Plenty of such people in Shanghai and other places.  But where the southern part of China is concerned, there are many many more HK fans than haters as you will see from this thread.

At the end of the day, there are all kinds of internal competition within China amongst her own people.  HK will have to compete with Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and other province etc.  We have always been competing with the rest of the world and we don't shy away from competition.

As to who will have the last laugh and who will have to lick a bruised ego, it will be determined by the outcome of the competitions.  My bet is on HK.

The people who measure success by the number of skyscrappers and good food are HK fans from the mainland.  Of course we locals know the evil of capitalism only too well, we have been working our fingers to the bone for a home the size of a stamp and for food that slowly kills us.
