i went to an antique place the other day and the shop only stocks old chinese furniture. it is the real deal, original, the owner goes over to china and buys it. it was beautiful stuff will try and find some pics of it.not like the reproduciton stuff that is sold here. the guy told me he mainly buys from sichuan but also further west in gansu etc. it looks like probably middle class peoples stuff from 1900- 1920s. i never really saw this stuff in china. anyone else seen it.

To tell you the truth, a lot of the stuff on the site looks like Japanese Dansu.

There seem to be more knick-knacks from China ... which you used to be able to find in abundance around YuYuan in Shanghai before the 'Disneyland' version appeared. (ie. the beautification of old China by knocking it down and replacing it with plasterboard replicas with recessed lighting that never gets turned on because it is too expensive for the shop owners to run.)

Another thing you should consider in light of recent events ... Sichuan was just flattened by a certain earthquake and many who had not been swayed by the appeal of modern flat-pack venered chipboard probably saw the last few pieces of this stuff get flattened in houses of similar vintage.

Sorry to burst your bubble Drive By but the ones you showed are not valuable, not even the best style of Chinese furniture.  HK has a lot of good real thing and replica.

Polly, few people in Australia can afford Ming Dynasty furniture.

He specifically states that the trend is towards Qing Dynasty BECAUSE it is affordable.

There is also a trend in the USA and Canada to solid Pine Furniture ... farmhouse stuff.

To tell you the truth, I have been to the museums and to the houses/gardens in Suzhou and the furniture is not functional although it looks good.

Peasant furniture is often more comfortable.

Drive By, there is one furniture store in 周莊,上海, that sells real antique Chinese furniture, not necessarily Ming's, you should go there.

the other thing smokie is how to tell a fake. beyond me.
With the Chinese stuff, there isn't much chance of a fake because most Chinese don't LIKE the stuff. They want foreign stuff or the crap you see during the Mao era. It's what they were brought up on. (Upholstered arm chairs with doilies)

Second hand markets are filled with the stuff and the Chinese are not fond of second hand stuff.

There is one around the corner from me.

Shan can show you the one in Suzhou.

A lot of it, they will break down for firewood.

The Japanese Dansu however are worth a fortune and you can tell them by the handles and pull plates. They will be made of iron ... not steel and they won't be painted.

They use split pins driven through the plates and bent over at the back to hold on the door and drawer pulls.

If you see a screw anywhere ... run like he wind.

Iron fixtures and nails are the standard in this case.

how do you make a comparison between ming and qing. it is simply a prefernece of style. i find the ming style too minimalist.
